Google Releases A Tool For Developers To Launch Android Apps On Windows, Mac, Linux And Chrome OS

Google Releases A Tool For Developers To Launch Android Apps On Windows, Mac, Linux And Chrome OS

Google has opened up its App Runtime for Chrome (ARC) to developers so they can run their apps on any desktop with a Chrome browser, reports Ars Technica.

ARC is a project that allows Android apps to run on Chrome OS, and it was previously limited to a small group of developers who got to collaborate with Google to do so. Now, the company has launched a new Chrome app packager that allows anyone to run their Android apps on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome OS.

The new tool, dubbed ARC Welder, is a Chrome app that handles the mobile-to-desktop conversion in just a few clicks, using your Android app’s APK file for the job. We tested it and found Twitter’s Android app running just fine on Windows.

Interestingly, ARC runs on Android 4.4 and not Android 5.0 Lollipop.

In addition to opening up ARC Welder to developers, ARC now includes Google Play Services, which are essential for running certain apps that use OAuth2, Google Cloud Messaging, Google+ sign-in and other services from the company.

However, ARC doesn’t yet include all Play Services, and so, some apps that require missing services like in-app purchasing will fail to run or crash. Hopefully Google will add these in the near future to enable more apps to run on various desktop platforms.

This is huge, because it means that developers can build a single app and have it run on Android mobile devices as well as most desktops. With Microsoft promising a unified Windows 10 OS for PCs, phones and tablets later this year, it’s important for Google to help Android keep pace — and this seems to be a smart way to do so.

Facebook Launches New Products, Tools To Connect Family Of Apps

Facebook Launches New Products, Tools To Connect Family Of Apps
Facebook's annual developer conferences, F8, is just one day over, and already they've made major announcements in terms of new platforms, products, and tools to take advantage of the social media giant's entire portfolio of apps. The biggest ones concerned their Messenger app, which has now been opened for developers, and the preview of the upcoming Businesses on Messenger platform where businesses can interact directly and one-on-one with customers.

More than 2,500 developers are attending the conference and Mark Zuckerberg shared with them three things that are really important for Facebook right now: making people their first priority, giving people more apps and therefore more options to connect, and showing them the future of sharing. They want to be able to give a chance for the developers to reach this potential audience of 1.39 billion people through these products and tools that they announced, which numbered more than 25.

Aside from the aforementioned Messenger Platform and Businesses on Messenger, which we discussed in detail in another article, some of the other highlighted features include a New Share Sheet that will make it easier for people to share from apps to Facebook; Facebook Analytics for Apps; inclusion of LiveRail's monetization platform; using Parse for building a new category of apps; updated Social Plugins; and probably the most exciting part, a 360-degree video experience that can let you choose which angle to view whatever you're watching.

The upcoming Day 2 of F8 is expected to bring more news from Facebook's Connectivity Lab, AI Research and Oculus. If you want to listen in on the session, you don't need to go to California. You can view the livestream here.

Motorola Offers Limited Offer Discount For Moto G (1st Gen)

Motorola Offers Limited Offer Discount For Moto G (1st Gen)

While most people are excited that Motorola is coming out with the 2nd Gen of their Moto G, don't forget that the 1st gen is awesome as well. The OEM is not letting you forget about the original, as they're offering a $40 discount when you buy a no-contract version of the Moto G with 4G LTE from their online store. And if you're looking for a new mid-tier device, you should take advantage of this offer.

The Moto G runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU. It has a 4.5-inch with 1280 x 720 HD, 329 ppi Corning® Gorilla® Glass display. It has 8GB of internal storage, but supports microSD cards of up to 32GB. The main camera has 5MP while the front-facing one has 1.3MP, and video capture is at 720p HD. Out of the box, it has Android 4.4 KitKat, but Motorola is rolling out an update for the Moto G 1st Gen in the next few weeks to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The 2nd generation Moto G or Moto G 2015 4G (they should really come up with simpler names right?) is almost the same as its predecessor except that it has a bigger display at 5" and its rear camera is much improved at 8MP with the front camera getting a slight upgrade to 2MP. It also runs on KitKat out of the box, but there will be an upgrade to Lollipop eventually.

You can get the Moto G 1st Gen with 4G LTE for only $159.99 from their online store only until March 25. The Moto G 2nd Gen will not have a discount of course, but you can buy it at just $179.99, off-contract from the site as well.
